The 48,000-panel quilt

If you’re in Washington this month, check out the amazing AIDs Memorial Quilt on display as part of the The Folklife Festival.

As the quilt has 48,000 panels and, all together, is 1.3 million square feet and weighs 54 tons, it can’t be displayed as a single piece. But the 8,000 panels on display are more than enough.

Started in 1987, each 3′ x 6′ section is made by a family member or friend in honour of the person they knew. Take tissues.
