I saw a plaited rug outside a charity shop once and thought, ‘I can make that’! So I did, here’s how:
Cut up old tshirts and tops into 2-3 inch wide strips. Make sure you have similar weight fabrics to make the rug as even as possible.
I found cutting tshirts into a spiral shape meant I could get one long strip of material; meaning less knots and less wasted material.
Take three strips and tie a starting knot. Then start plaiting, when one piece of fabric ends just tie on the next.
When all the fabric is finished and you have a hugely long plait (it was a bit hard to manoeuvre at this stage) take one end and start laying it in a spiral shape.
Stitch the lengths of plait together with double thread for extra strength.
Keep going in a spiral. It takes shape quickly in the beginning but my fingers took a bit of punishment! I’d been working on it for a couple of days at this point.
When you’re done (finally!) snip off all the thread ends and turn over.
